What's the best choice for subframe materials...

Timber Subframes:

Timber has been the traditional choice for decking subframes due to its ease of sourcing, and cost-effectiveness. However, timber is susceptible to moisture, which can lead to rot, warping, and other weather-related issues. To combat this, timber subframes require treatment and protective measures:

  • Treatment: Most timber used for subframes undergoes a pressure treatment process to increase its resistance to decay, pests, and moisture. For instance, upgrading to H4 treated timber can provide enhanced protection for parts of the subframe in contact with or close to the ground, offering a solid defence against moisture ingress.

  • Protection: To extend the lifespan of a timber subframe further, additional protective measures are employed:

  • Vapour Seal Joist Protection Tape: This tape is applied to the top of the joists to create a moisture barrier, preventing water from seeping into the timber and causing rot.

  • Bitumen Paint: Applying bitumen paint to the subframe offers an extra layer of waterproofing, shielding the wood from moisture penetration and extending the subframe’s durability.

Despite these protective measures, timber subframes do require ongoing maintenance to manage wear and tear over time.

Aluminium Subframes: The Modern, Maintenance-Free Solution

For those looking for a more permanent solution with minimal upkeep, aluminium subframes present an attractive alternative. Aluminium's inherent properties make it immune to rust, rot, and pest infestation, marking it as an ideal material for areas prone to moisture or with low ground clearance.

  • Click Deck System: One of the innovative features of aluminium subframes is the click deck system, which allows for easier and faster installation. This system ensures a strong, secure foundation with precise spacing, creating a stable, squeak-free deck surface.

  • Low Areas Recommendation: Aluminium subframes are particularly recommended for low-lying areas where moisture is a constant challenge. Their resistance to corrosion and decay makes them a superior choice for environments that would typically hasten the deterioration of a timber subframe.

  • Lifetime Guarantee: Many aluminium subframe systems come with a lifetime guarantee, reflecting their superior durability and longevity. Opting for an aluminium subframe significantly reduces the long-term maintenance needs of your decking, offering peace of mind and savings over the years.

Making the Right Choice

The decision between timber and aluminium subframes depends on several factors, including budget, aesthetic preference, environmental conditions, and maintenance willingness. While timber subframes can be cost-effective and aesthetically pleasing with proper treatment and protection, they do require regular maintenance to ensure their longevity. On the other hand, aluminium subframes, with their maintenance-free appeal and lifetime durability, might have a higher initial cost but prove to be cost-effective in the long run, especially in moisture-prone areas. The click deck system associated with aluminium subframes also offers an added benefit of easy installation and a perfectly stable deck.

Ultimately, whether you choose timber or aluminium for your decking subframe, the key is to understand the care requirements and long-term implications of your choice. With the right protection and maintenance, timber can last for years; however, for a truly worry-free solution, aluminium provides a robust, enduring foundation for your decking project.
