Project Overview:
During the 2020 season of The Block, contestants Sarah and George collaborated with
Dave Franklin from Franklin Landscapes to design an outdoor space that stood out
during Landscape Week. Our project involved designing and constructing a bespoke
outdoor table made of charred timber with a metal frame. The design aimed for
simplicity and visual appeal, featuring a round end on one side and a single leg.
Design Process:
The design process began with a brainstorming session alongside Dave Franklin, where
we discussed the aesthetic and functional goals for the outdoor space. The idea was to
create a statement piece that would tie the area together while reflecting modern, sleek
design principles. We decided on charred ash for the tabletop to bring in a rich, textured
look, complemented by a powder-coated black metal frame for contrast and durability.
The main challenge was ensuring that the table, despite its unique design, was
functional and sturdy. The round end and single leg required precise engineering to
maintain balance and stability. We opted for a minimalist approach to the frame, which
not only supported the table but did so in a visually unobtrusive manner.
Construction and Delivery:
The table's construction was meticulously handled off-site. The charred ash tabletop was
handcrafted to fit seamlessly into the powder-coated black steel frame. Each element of
the table was carefully measured and assembled to ensure a perfect fit and finish. The
final product was a harmonious blend of natural and industrial materials.
Timing was critical in delivering the table. We worked tirelessly to complete the
construction and transport it just in time for the big reveal the next morning. The plan
came together flawlessly, and the table was installed without a hitch, ready to impress
the judges.
Judges' Feedback:
The Block judges were thoroughly impressed with Sarah and George's outdoor space.
Shaynna Blaze particularly highlighted the barbecue area integration, stating, "The
barbecue is plumbed in and integrated with natural gas, which is also a real luxury.
Perfect, that is incredible." Her praise extended to the table, which she claimed was one
of the best she had ever seen.
Darren Palmer added, "This is something that you would walk down that hallway and
end up here as a buyer and just go, 'I want it. I want this.'" Their positive feedback
underscored the success of the design and execution.
Result:
Sarah and George, along with their landscape guru Dave Franklin, had ambitious plansfor their outdoor space, and their efforts paid off handsomely. They won Landscape
Week with a perfect score of 30 out of 30. The table played a crucial role in their victory,
showcasing both innovative design and high-quality craftsmanship.
Conclusion:
This project exemplifies the power of collaboration and creative design. Working
alongside Dave Franklin and The Block contestants, we created a standout piece that not
only met the practical needs of the space but also elevated its aesthetic appeal. The
perfect score from the judges is a testament to the success of this beautifully executed
project.
